tvN's new weekend drama 'Bon Appétit, Your Majesty' is drawing increasing attention after the broadcast of its second episode.
On an online forum, netizens discussed YoonA and Lee Chae Min's new drama, which launched with strong ratings for its first episode on August 23. Following the second episode on August 24, viewers said the storyline, food depictions, and character development became "a lot more interesting and exciting," leaving audiences eager to tune in next week.
'Bon Appétit, Your Majesty' is a fantasy romantic comedy about a chef who time-slips to the past at the peak of her career and encounters a tyrant king with a refined palate. YoonA plays Yeon Ji Young, a French cuisine chef who unexpectedly finds herself transported back in time. Lee Chae Min takes on his first role as a king since debut, with expectations of delivering an intense performance.
The drama is based on the web novel 'Surviving As The Chef Of Yeonsangun' (literal translation), a fictional work of alternate history inspired by Yeonsangun, the 10th monarch of the Joseon dynasty of Korea in the late 15th century.
According to netizens, one of the drama’s unique charms is how it portrays Korea's infamous tyrant king as a "pure romantic." Many also highlighted the casting choice of a younger male lead opposite a strong, determined female lead, creating a striking contrast with his "obsessive and childlike behavior" that shows he has yet to fully mature.
Some viewers admitted they were "not really in love with the male protagonist at first," but gradually warmed to his "immature yet charming" qualities, while also enjoying the humor woven throughout the drama.
Netizens praised the series for "extremely funny scenes" and for offering a "fresh" and "unexpected" pairing between the male and female leads. One viewer even described the couple as "a love story between an immature foodie and a top chef."
"Wait, are they saying Yeonsangun is a pure romantic? The male lead is all obsessive, but then Yeon Ji Young (the female lead) is just blank-faced like a dead fish eye lolololol. It's the male character who is insanely longing and in love with himself."
"They say the Lee Heon–Ji Young is such a hilarious couple."
"The love-hate chemistry between leads YoonA and Lee Chae Min made episode 2 really immersive, according to a lot of people."
"But honestly it was really fun... The cooking scenes were great, and the male/female lead bickering was hilarious lolol. Time flew by so fast. I laughed so hard at the CGI when they were eating, it was silly in the best way."
"Usually when a modern person time-slips to Joseon, there’s always that specific tone of speech, and I felt that a bit from YoonA, so I was hesitant. But seeing the preview, from next week it looks better. I peeked at today’s ep and it was fun."
"Honestly, Lee Chae Min is perfect for this role. If an older male actor did it instead of YoonA’s younger partner, people would’ve been like ‘oh… that’s a bit much.’ But because he’s younger, it comes off as precious and forgivable. Anyway, the drama is so fun and the visuals of the leads being super handsome/pretty make it even better."
"Foodie baby and top chef... so fun"
"Super fun lol the cooking parts? I liked the directing too, and the leads’ visuals are great, really enjoyable"
"Crazy fun lol the male lead’s gaze was better than I expected"
"I didn’t expect much but it’s actually worth watching lol. Lee Chae Min wasn’t that good in his past works, but here he’s doing really well. I thought YoonA would just do cliché comic acting, but she’s pulling it off naturally without overacting"
"I avoided episode 1 because I wasn’t into the male lead, but people said it was good so I tried today and wow it’s really fun. The male lead is acting well"
"Episode 1 felt a bit slow, but today’s was really fun"
"It was fun, no one’s acting poorly so it’s easy to watch, and the little mimicking reactions whenever they eat made me laugh"
"The cooking scenes are so good!! Fun and they make me hungry"
"Even if it’s cheesy, it’s still fun lol. The food descriptions were also nice"
"So fun, I wish next week would come faster"
"It’s so fun, it’s been a while since something made my heart flutter"
"Whenever the two are on screen together it’s hilarious lol their chemistry is way better than I expected"
"The two match so well, Lee Chae Min really nailed the tone. I think he’ll blow up after this ends"
"I knew YoonA would shine and fit well, and she really does. The male lead being younger was the right choice—the chemistry is good and the story’s fun"
"Super fun lol YoonA is killing it, and Lee Chae Min really suits historical drama too. Their chemistry is great"
"It’s cheesy but fun lol. They even give little recaps in between which makes it easier to follow. Honestly, I think changing the male lead was a good move—because he feels younger, even when the king messes up it’s forgivable"
"YoonA’s comic acting is good, and the male lead’s historical drama tone is better than expected lol. I watched it with my parents and we laughed together"
"Super fun, I laughed so hard during the MSG scene lol"
