Maple, a survivor of sexual violence at the hands of Jung Myung Seok, leader of the controversial religious group JMS (Jesus Morning Star, officially known as the Christian Gospel Mission), has published a book detailing her experiences.
She first came to international attention through Netflix’s documentary 'In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal,' where she publicly revealed her identity and shared her testimony of abuse, shocking audiences around the world.
In a recent post on social media, Maple reflected on her decision to speak out. “At the age of 28, three years ago, I reported JMS. I revealed my face, my real name, and the details of my assault. That was how such a massive organization with a 40-year history could be brought down,” she wrote. “Today, I published a book. It is also about JMS. Some may wonder why I felt the need to release a book when my story was already told in 'In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal' and 'The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea’s Tragedies.' But I know many questions still remain.”
Maple explained that her book goes deeper than the documentaries. It recounts in detail how she was recruited at 16 and 17, subjected to indoctrination, and eventually broke free before pressing charges.
“For me personally, writing was a way to process the pain and heal. For readers, I hope it serves as a warning. If you follow such a path, it can lead to devastating consequences. I want people to recognize the signs and protect themselves from harm,” she said.
She added, “Pain must be turned into something meaningful, otherwise it remains just pain. If transformed, it can become comfort, love, and hope not only for survivors but also for those around them, for society, and even the world. My hope is that the traces of my journey will have a positive impact on others.”
Maple also urged awareness beyond the JMS case. “Cult-like and manipulative groups exist everywhere in society. People can get trapped without even realizing it. I hope others can avoid, escape, or help those who are ensnared. This is not just Korea’s problem. It is a global issue that must be addressed.”
Meanwhile, producer Cho Sung Hyun, who directed both 'In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal' and 'The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea’s Tragedies,' shared an update at a recent press event.“Maple is expecting a baby in December and will soon become a mother. To see survivors reclaim happiness in everyday life, and even bring new life into the world, makes us feel that the work was worthwhile. Above all, it is deeply moving.”
