Japanese actor Sato Takeru is facing backlash from Korean fans after his recent appearance on YouTube show “Neighborhood Friend Kangnami” hosted by singer Kangnam. The interview, which was meant to be a lighthearted conversation about drama OST work, has drawn mixed reactions due to Sato’s casual speech and demeanor.

During the video, Kangnam asked, “What year were you born?” to which Sato replied, “1989.” When Kangnam revealed he was born in 1987, Sato casually responded in informal Japanese, “Then we’re basically classmates,” using speech typically reserved for younger or very close acquaintances. The tone caught Kangnam off guard, prompting him to laugh and respond, “What are you talking about? I’m two years older!”

Sato then attempted to justify his tone by saying, “But I went to school with people born in ’88,” a comment that created a brief awkward silence on set.

While many fans were excited simply to see the two personalities meet, reactions online quickly diverged. Some criticized Sato’s use of informal speech with someone older, especially during a first meeting and while filming in Korea. Comments like “This is the first time I’ve seen a Japanese actor in Korea act so rudely,” and “If you want respect in another country, you should be respectful too,” gained traction.

On the flip side, others defended Sato, saying he may have felt comfortable because of Kangnam’s friendly nature. One user noted, “Maybe he was just trying to be casual—Kangnam seemed to handle it well.”

Despite the controversy, Kangnam was praised for his composure and professionalism, with many noting that he kept the interview flowing naturally and maintained a lighthearted atmosphere. Some fans called him “a true pro,” especially given the potentially awkward moment.

Meanwhile, Sato Takeru has found himself unexpectedly embroiled in controversy, as viewers debate cultural expectations around politeness, especially between Japanese and Korean customs.

Kangnam, who married Olympic speed skater Lee Sang-hwa in 2019, continues to be active in both Korea and Japan, and the interview coincides with his OST participation in a Japanese drama.
