It has been belatedly confirmed that actor Song Young Kyu has been referred to the prosecution for driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to a News1 report on July 25, the Yongin Dongbu Police Station in Gyeonggi Province referred Song to the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office without detention at the end of last month on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (DUI).
The incident took place around 11 p.m. on July 19, when Song allegedly drove approximately 5 kilometers from Giheung-gu to Cheoin-gu in Yongin while heavily intoxicated. Police launched an investigation after receiving a tip from a witness who reported that the driver appeared to be under the influence.
Following the report, officers were able to identify and stop Song’s vehicle. A breathalyzer test revealed that his blood alcohol concentration was above 0.08%, a level high enough to warrant license cancellation under Korean law.
According to the investigation, Song had been drinking with acquaintances in the Giheung area and chose to drive himself home afterward. A police official declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the case.
Song Young Kyu debuted in 1994 in the children’s musical 'Taoist Meoteol' and has since gained a reputation as a versatile scene-stealer in both films and dramas.
His notable works include the blockbuster film 'Extreme Job' (2019), where he played the role of Chief Choi, as well as appearances in Netflix’s 'Narco-Saints' and Disney+’s 'Big Bet' (2022).
He is currently appearing in the ENA Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Defects' as Pastor Yoon Se Hoon, and is also set to appear as rugby team coach Kim Min Jung in SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama 'The Winning Try,' which premieres tonight. Additionally, he is performing in the stage play 'Shakespeare in Love,' running at the Seoul Arts Center through September 14.
