With Ja Myung Go and Dream flopping in ratings against the MBC juggernaut, Queen Seon Duk, perhaps it's no surprise to see SBS reacting to drastic measures to halt the slide and seek a new path for it's future dramas.
SBS has now reacted to MBC's Queen Seon Duk which has been averaging ratings of over 40% recently, by announcing on the 16th that they will move their Mon-Tue drama timeslot a hour earlier to 9 instead of 10pm. This unprecedented move will begin on 10th October, coinciding with the premiere of their new drama, Angel's Temptation, said to be the male version of SBS's previous hit, Temptation of Wife. The 10pm timeslot will be taken up by human documentaries instead, which could be good or bad for KBS and MBC.
So with this, Angel's Temptation will be doing battle against news programmes from KBS and MBC instead. Although falling short of admitting outright defeat in their battle against Queen Seon Duk, SBS explained, "We hope that this new arrangement will offer viewers more choices in which to spend their Monday and Tuesday nights. We hope to satisfy the demands of viewers who have been clamouring for human documentaries and seek to find an all-new viewership base."
With Queen Seon Duk extended by 12 episodes and only ending on 22nd December, SBS has got nothing to lose with this move, although unfamilarity and asking viewers to shift their viewing patterns could be a big problem. We will have to wait and see whether SBS will find any luck with this move.
