Nana (formerly of After School) and her mother have once again announced their decision not to appear in court to testify against their accused home intruder.
Nana and her mother's refusal to appear as witnesses for this case has sparked concern over how court proceedings will be affected. On March 21, Nana once again explicitly stated her refusal to testify as a witness in the trial of a man in his 30s—identified as "Mr. A"—who broke into her home and committed robbery and assault.
Nana's mother first submitted a formal notice of non-attendance as a witness on February 26, expressing that she would not testify in court. Nana filed a notice of non-attendance soon after, and the court date was postponed to March 24.
However, Nana and her mother have now submitted their notices of non-attendance for a second time, making it clear that they do not want to come face-to-face with the suspect 'Mr. A' in court.
The suspect, Mr. A, was arrested on November 15 on charges of breaking into Nana's home in Guri, Gyeonggi Province. He is accused of attempting to rob Nana and her mother while threatening them with a deadly weapon. After a physical struggle with the intruder, Nana and her mother successfully subdued the intruder until the police arrived - though both Nana and her mother sustained serious injuries during the incident.
Subsequently, Mr. A recently filed a countersuit against Nana, accusing her of attempted murder. However, police determined that Nana's actions constituted justifiable self-defense.
During the first trial, held on January 20, Mr. A admitted to using a ladder to break into Nana's home - but argued that he had not entered the house with the intent to commit robbery, and that he was not armed with a deadly weapon when he entered. He also accused Nana and her mother of attacking him first, saying that he was the one who had tried to de-escalate the situation. The suspect denied strangling Nana's mother, saying that he only "grabbed her by the shoulder, not the neck," and accused Nana of attacking him unprovoked.
In response, the judge asked Mr. A, "Put yourself in their shoes: if someone were to break into your home in the early hours of the morning and try to rob you with a weapon, would you simply stand there and do nothing? You wouldn't just lie low and quietly obey if you were in that situation, would you?" To this, Mr. A replied, "That's true."
