The National Pension Service (NPS) experienced a temporary disruption after a surge of international calls and emails linked to ENHYPEN member Heeseung’s departure.
On March 18 KST, NPS Chairman Kim Sung Joo revealed that the agency’s International Pension Service Center was overwhelmed after receiving a sudden influx of overseas inquiries. According to him, approximately 1,500 emails were received within just two hours, alongside a flood of phone calls that temporarily paralyzed operations.
The incident was triggered after posts circulated on social media encouraging fans to protest to NPS, a major shareholder of HYBE, following news of Heeseung’s exit. Some posts even shared screenshots of the center’s contact information, urging coordinated complaints.
In response, Kim emphasized that NPS is a long term institutional investor managing public retirement funds and does not intervene in corporate management or personnel decisions. “We do not engage in matters such as K-pop group formations or member changes,” he clarified.
The International Pension Service Center, which primarily supports foreign workers in Korea and Koreans working abroad, reportedly faced disruptions that affected regular pension related consultations.
While the situation stemmed from a rapidly spreading online movement, the NPS noted that the incident also highlighted misunderstandings about its role and responsibilities as a public pension fund.
