A man in his 30s, identified as A, who was sentenced to prison in a second trial for breaking into broadcaster Park Na Rae’s home and stealing valuables worth tens of millions of KRW, has filed an appeal to the Supreme Court.
According to reports on February 13th KST, A submitted a petition on the 11th challenging the appellate court’s ruling on charges of theft and nighttime trespassing.
Previously, on the 5th, the Criminal Division 2 1 (Appeals) of the Seoul Western District Court sentenced A to two years in prison, the same sentence handed down in the first trial, after he was indicted on charges of theft and nighttime residential intrusion.
At the time, the court stated, “The defendant appealed the first trial’s two year prison sentence, claiming it was too heavy. While his prior theft convictions are not recent, he committed this crime during a suspended sentence period,”adding, “Based on the reasoning of the first trial, it is difficult to conclude that the sentence falls outside a reasonable range.”
A is accused of breaking into Park Na Rae’s home in Yongsan gu, Seoul, in April of last year and stealing valuables worth tens of millions of KRW. During the police investigation, he reportedly stated that he did not know the house belonged to Park Na Rae when he entered and stole the items.
In the first trial, the court considered factors such as his prior record for similar offenses, the fact that the crime was committed during a probation period, the high value of the stolen items, and the victim’s request for strict punishment in sentencing him to two years in prison. A subsequently appealed the ruling.
In his final statement, A said, “I acknowledge all the crimes I committed. I sincerely apologize for how serious my offense was and for the great pain it caused the victim.”
