The play ‘Life of Pi’ was canceled just five minutes before showtime, triggering strong backlash from audiences. The sold-out February 10 performance at GS Arts Center was called off due to a sudden lighting equipment malfunction that could not be resolved in time, the production said.
Actors, including Park Jung Min, had been waiting backstage while repairs were attempted. With no clear solution and safety concerns, the team ultimately decided to cancel. The production apologized and announced refunds worth 110 percent of the ticket price.
However, many viewers criticized both the last-minute notice — reportedly delivered only through a low-volume announcement — and the compensation policy. Some pointed out that when customers cancel tickets themselves, they can face penalties of around 30 percent, arguing it is unfair that a same-day cancellation by the production only adds an extra 10 percent.
Based on the novel by Yann Martel, ‘Life of Pi’ depends heavily on lighting and stage technology, making technical checks essential. While the cancellation was made for safety, both audiences and performers were left deeply disappointed.
