Former AOAmember Kwon Mina has sparked renewed concern after sharing an emotionally charged Instagram post in which she questioned why she has been treated as someone who “should die,” while also alleging long-standing mistreatment and double standards within the entertainment industry.
In the lengthy post, Kwon Mina opened by asking, “One last thing I want to ask. Why do people want me dead?” She went on to list serious crimes such as drug use, drunk driving, and assault, questioning whether she had committed any illegal acts that would justify the level of condemnation she has faced. “Did I do drugs? Did I drive drunk? Did I beat someone or commit a crime? Did I do something illegal?” she wrote.
She then criticized what she described as gender-based double standards in the entertainment industry, arguing that male celebrities are often able to return to their careers even after serious controversies, while women are permanently stigmatized. According to Kwon Mina, men with established fan bases can temporarily halt activities and later resume their careers as if nothing happened, while women are effectively pushed out. She admitted feeling conflicted, writing that she can still watch dramas or films starring such actors and think they are impressive, while wondering why she alone has become someone who “deserves to die.”
The post also included deeply personal recollections from her time in her former group. Kwon Mina described feeling intimidated and silenced, claiming she was repeatedly forced to listen to others criticize fellow members while she remained unable to agree or speak up. She recalled struggling with severe insomnia and an increasing reliance on sleeping pills, and questioned whether her refusal to join in attacking others was the reason she became a target.
She further alleged that she was portrayed as a “scary” or “foolish” person to new staff members, despite her efforts to be careful with her words and behavior. Kwon Mina shared that she often searched words in advance to avoid making mistakes, yet was still labeled negatively. She also spoke about her difficult family circumstances and financial responsibilities during her trainee years, writing that she had hoped for understanding after opening up, but now feels she was naive for doing so.
The raw and detailed post followed earlier New Year’s Day messages in which Kwon Mina hinted at self-harm. In a subsequent post, she suggested that she had lost consciousness and later heard someone waking her, implying that she had been rescued from immediate danger. Together, the posts have heightened public concern over her mental and emotional well-being.
Kwon Mina debuted as a member of AOA and later worked as both a singer and actress. After leaving the group in 2019, she accused former leader Jimin of bullying, triggering widespread controversy. More recently, she signed an exclusive contract with MODEN BERRY KOREA, which was later terminated by mutual agreement.
