KATSEYE, the collaborative girl group from HYBE and Geffen Records, has once again captured the attention of global music fans, signaling a new wave of popularity.
According to Spotify's latest charts released on January 3 (local time), the group's new song 'Internet Girl' ranked 6th on the Daily Top Songs US and 13th on the Daily Top Songs Global on the day after its release. The track recorded approximately 2.87 million streams within 24 hours on Spotify, the highest first-day streaming figure among the group's discography to date.
Despite being released as a "fan favorite track" rather than a primary promotional single, the song has shown significant chart performance. This follows the group's previous releases, 'Gabriela' and 'Gnarly', from their second EP 'BEAUTIFUL CHAOS'.
'Internet Girl' is a dance-pop track with lyrics that address online social media reactions. The song's traction has been aided by a specific choreography segment on TikTok and Instagram, where users record short-form videos of the members' rapid facial expression changes, a trend referred to by fans as the "emoji dance."
The release of 'Internet Girl' has also impacted the group's previous catalogue. 'Gabriela', released in June of last year, rose 38 positions to 14th on the Spotify Weekly Top Songs Global chart, while 'Gnarly' re-entered the same chart at 191st.
KATSEYE debuted in the United States in June 2024 through the audition program 'The Debut: Dream Academy'. The group is often cited as a result of the "multi-home, multi-genre" strategy led by HYBE Chairman Bang Si Hyuk.
To date, the group has placed 'Gnarly' and 'Gabriela' on the Billboard Hot 100, and their EP 'BEAUTIFUL CHAOS' peaked at 4th on the Billboard 200. KATSEYE is currently nominated for Best New Artist and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 68th Grammy Awards scheduled for next month.
