Singer and musical actress Ock Joo Hyun has been handed over to prosecutors on charges of operating an unregistered entertainment agency.
According to the Namyangju Northern Police Station on December 1st KST, Ock Joo Hyun was transferred without detention to the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors’ Office Namyangju Branch on the 27th of last month on charges of violating the Act on the Development of the Public Culture and Arts Industry.
Ock Joo Hyun is accused of running TOI Entertainment, an entertainment agency she founded, without registering as a public culture and arts business operator. Because the company is based in Byeollae-dong, Namyangju, the Namyangju Northern Police conducted the investigation.
As the issue gained attention, Ock Joo Hyun’s side explained, “After establishing a one-person agency in April 2022 and proceeding with the registration process, we failed to complete certain administrative steps due to a lack of understanding of the procedure at that time. It was an oversight, not an intentional attempt to evade legal requirements or operate unlawfully.” The agency has reportedly completed its registration during the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s guidance period for the industry-wide registration process.
Under the law, operating without registration as a public culture and arts business operator may result in imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to 20 million KRW(approximately 14,000 USD).
