Netflix has released the main trailer for 'The Great Flood,' the Korean sci-fi disaster blockbuster set to premiere on December 19, heightening anticipation for what promises to be an epic end-of-the-world thriller.
The trailer spotlights the desperate struggle for survival in a world submerged by a cataclysmic flood caused by an asteroid collision. Its overwhelming scale and tense pacing immediately draw viewers into the film’s apocalyptic vision.
Directed by Kim Byung Woo, 'The Great Flood' unfolds over the final day before the world is swallowed by water, focusing on humanity’s last stand inside a high-rise apartment complex slowly sinking beneath the waves. After screening in the “Korean Cinema Today – Special Premiere” section at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, the film earned high praise from Cine21 editor-in-chief Song Kyung Won, who called it “a captivating labyrinth of a film that explores the human heart—something even greater than the disaster itself.”

The newly released trailer showcases powerful performances by Kim Da Mi as Anna, an AI researcher, and Park Hae Soo as Hee Jo, a member of the Human Resource Security Team. Tension spikes from the moment Hee Jo tells Anna, “Humanity ends today,” entrusting her with the monumental task of creating a new generation of humankind.
As the flood engulfs the city without warning, the apartment complex where Anna and her young son Ja In (Kwon Eun Sung) live collapses into chaos. Scenes of explosions, massive waves, and peril at every turn heighten the sense of urgency as Anna carries Jain on her back while racing toward the rooftop under Hee Jo’s guidance.
The trailer also highlights the film’s emotional core. After Anna loses her ailing son in the mayhem, her tearful plea—“Just let me find him myself”—underscores her anguish as she searches the flooded building. Meanwhile, Hee Jo’s mission to protect Anna brings them into sharp conflict, capturing the story’s central tension.

A particularly intriguing detail is a mysterious golden particle that mirrors the movement of the waves. This enigmatic element hints that The Great Flood may expand beyond the boundaries of a conventional disaster film. Hee Jo’s line, “I’d like to see what you do in the end, Anna,” paired with a shot of Anna swimming alone across a vast open sea, deepens the mystery surrounding the film’s conclusion.
Centered on Anna and Ja In—now humanity’s last hope—the survival narrative promises gripping action, emotional depth, and a story impossible to look away from. With the combined force of Kim Da Mi and Park Hae Soo’s performances and Kim Byung Woo’s dynamic direction, 'The Great Flood' is set to make a global impact when it premieres worldwide on Netflix on December 19.
