Recent controversies involving entertainers Jo Se Ho and Lee Yi Kyung have repeatedly resulted in secondary criticism directed at Yoo Jae Suk, despite his lack of direct involvement in the matters. The pattern has raised questions about the level of responsibility and expectation placed on Yoo, who is widely regarded as one of South Korea’s leading television hosts.
Comedian Jo Se ho recently became the subject of allegations posted by a social media account that collects anonymous reports of alleged celebrity misconduct. The account claimed that Jo maintained personal ties with an individual allegedly linked to organized crime and received expensive gifts from him. It further asserted that Jo promoted the individual’s franchise business and socialized with him, releasing photos as purported evidence.
Jo Se ho’s agency A2Z Entertainment issued a prompt denial on December 5. The agency stated that the person in question was “an acquaintance Jo met at an event” and emphasized that “there were no quid pro quo gifts or inappropriate dealings.” It added that it is reviewing potential civil and criminal action in response to what it described as false accusations and the dissemination of unverified claims.
Despite this, Yoo Jae suk was once again dragged into a controversy that does not concern him directly. Jo Se ho currently co hosts tvN’s 'You Quiz on the Block' with Yoo Jae suk, and online commenters soon began asking why the “Nation’s MC” was not managing or speaking up about Jo Se ho’s situation. Similar criticism emerged earlier this year when Jo Se ho faced backlash for attending a breast cancer awareness event followed by a drink centered after party held in front of comedian Park Mi Sun, who was undergoing treatment at the time. Jo Se ho later apologized to Park during a broadcast, yet Yoo Jae suk was still pulled into the conversation by netizens who complained about his silence.
A similar pattern appeared in the case of actor Lee Yi kyung. After Lee announced that police had executed a search and seizure against malicious rumor spreaders, some online commenters criticized Yoo Jae suk for supposedly supporting him due to their connection on MBC’s 'Hangout with Yoo.' When Lee later revealed that his departure from the show had been encouraged by the production team rather than fully voluntary, commenters again targeted Yoo Jae suk, accusing him of failing to protect a junior cast member.
Observers point out that Yoo Jae suk has no direct responsibility for these controversies or for decisions made by production staff. Even so, his name continues to be the most widely consumed in public discussions. Critics argue that expecting Yoo Jae suk to control colleagues’ personal lives or intervene in agency and production matters is unreasonable and, at times, malicious.
Many netizens expressed sympathy for Yoo Jae suk, leaving comments such as “This is peak unfair criticism”, “I feel bad for him”, “Yoo Jae suk is not a god,” and “How can he control someone else’s private life”.
As controversies involving those around him continue to rise online, questions grow regarding whether this recurring pattern reflects the heavy and possibly unfair burden placed on someone who has long been regarded as the face of Korean variety entertainment.
