A new partner-swapping film coming to theaters in December has stirred up a debate among Korean netizens.

Coming to theaters across Korea on December 3 KST, 'The People Upstairs' is a comedy film directed by Ha Jung Woo and starring Ha Jung Woo, Honey Lee, Gong Hyo Jin, and Kim Dong Wook.

The film's synopsis is as follows:

"Do married couples really make love to each other every night? Don't you want to be honest?" Jung Ah (Gong Hyo Jin) and Hyun Soo (Kim Dong Wook)'s passionate newlywed days are over. Life is now just a boring cycle of ordinary days. What drives them crazy at night these days, though, are the noises from the bedroom of the upstairs couple, Mr. Kim (Ha Jung Woo) and his wife Soo Kyung (Honey Lee). One day, Jung Ah invites the upstairs couple to dinner to thank them for being understanding of the noises from their home renovations. At dinner, the couple from upstairs makes an unexpected offer..

As indicated by the synopsis, the film tells the story of married couples who engage in "partner swapping". In addition to the two main couples, the story also features several cameo couples (Hyun Bong SikAhn So Hee, Cha Tae Hyun & Ji Ye Eun).

Additionally, through several interviews, director and actor Ha Jung Woo assured that the film does not "contain any explicit scenes or 19+ bedroom scenes". Interestingly, he also observed that viewers who watch this movie "may earn some tips on what to do about married life, such as whether you should stay with your partner or decide that splitting up is the better answer."

So what did K-netizens have to say about this rather experimental Korean film? Some said:

"I think this goes to show how untalented Ha Jung Woo is as a movie director kekekekeke."
"The trope itself of 'sex partner swapping' has been around for ages, but no one is looking forward to this one because Ha Jung Woo made it."
"What if someone goes to see this movie without knowing what the plot is about? It could be pretty unlikeable."
"Is this movie just about the fantasy world of an ahjusshi??"
"Why are such top class actors doing such a low-grade story like this..?"
"There's a cameo where Cha Tae Hyun and Ji Ye Eun play a couple? Isn't Ji Ye Eun young enough to be Cha Tae Hyun's daughter??"
"Eww... this movie is not for me."
"I mean even if the story is about extramarital affairs, it could be done in a satirical way."
"I never understood Ha Jung Woo's sense of comedy. This kind of story just won't make me laugh."
"Well as long as it doesn't have unnecessary scenes demanding body exposure from the female actresses.."
"This seems like a waste of talent, especially for those top tier actors and actresses TT."
