Director Mo Hong Jin revealed the behind-the-scenes story of casting for the Korean-Vietnamese joint film 'Leaving Mom.'
A press screening and media conference for 'Leaving Mom' took place at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul’s Yongsan District recently.
During the event, Director Mo described actor Go Kyung Pyo as “the final piece of the puzzle.” He explained, “It was difficult to ask someone to appear just for one scene,” adding, “Go Kyung Pyo was as famous in Vietnam as Jung Il Woo, but I felt it would be impolite to reach out, so I didn’t contact him.” He went on to share, “Coincidentally, I met him on the flight to Vietnam. We talked in the restroom, and that’s how the casting happened.”

'Leaving Mom' is a heartwarming human drama about Hwan, a street barber who takes care of his mother suffering from Alzheimer’s. He embarks on a journey to Korea to bring her to his brother, whom he has never met. The film stars Vietnam’s national actors Tuan Tran and Hong Dao, along with Jung Il Woo. Go Kyung Pyo also makes a surprise appearance at an unexpected moment, further heightening anticipation.
The film premiered in Vietnam on August 1, topping the box office for 15 consecutive days and surpassing two million viewers. Reflecting on its success, Director Mo shared, “I only hoped the film wouldn’t incur a loss, but seeing it perform so well in Vietnam and now being released in Korea feels deeply meaningful.”
'Leaving Mom' was released in Korea on November 5 and is currently showing in theaters.
