Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon took on a new challenge—as a rapper.
On October 7th KST, Taeyeon uploaded a new video titled “10-year trainee Taeyeon will now show you her rap and dance skills: the rebellion of a vocal queen” on her YouTube channel.
Appearing as Taeyeon’s one-day rap mentor was none other than Nucksal. Shortly after, Key from SHINee dropped in, feigning disappointment: “What are you two doing without telling me?” Key explained that a dancer had asked why he wasn’t involved when Nucksal and Taeyeon were, but he hadn’t even known what was going on to begin with.
Nucksal, emphasizing that stage names are essential for rappers, proposed giving Taeyeon a proper rap alias. After some back-and-forth, he jokingly suggested “Tank”, while Key noted that rap names either had to make no sense at all or have deep meaning. Nucksal argued that since “Taengoo” (Taeyeon’s nickname) has a petite frame, she should go for a rougher name—like adding “water when there’s not enough water in the name.” He then blurted out “Get a Cyber Truck”, to which Key responded with “Cyber Tank!”—and thus, Taeyeon’s rap name was born.
Taeyeon then asked curiously, “How should I find my rap tone? I have a wide vocal range. I can go really low or high.” She demonstrated both, prompting Nucksal to laugh and say, “Stop doing impressions out of nowhere.” He added, “You’re such a good singer, you probably already know that harmonics are key when recording.”
After joking, “We need to debut,” Nucksal asked her to freestyle. But when Taeyeon gave it a try, he immediately pointed out, “Your rhythm is off.” Embarrassed, Taeyeon exclaimed, “I’m going to cry. This is going to be a career lowlight.” When she said she was good at mimicking others, Nucksal offered a guide verse. As she copied it, he quipped, “Don’t imitate me like people do on 'Amazing Saturday,'” drawing laughter. In the end, however, Taeyeon managed to impress Nucksal with her efforts.
In a mock interview segment, Nucksal was asked, “If Cyber Tank auditioned for 'Show Me the Money 12', would you give her a chain?” He jokingly replied, “You’re asking me to give up what little I have left? If she shows up wearing a chain, she’s going to lose it. You don’t go in wearing one—you give it away first.” Watching from behind, Taeyeon chimed in with a grin: “Let’s film a Reel together. I need to apply for Show Me the Money.”
