The Japanese fandom of actor Kim Soo Hyun has expressed their unwavering support by publishing a full-page advertisement in a Korean newspaper, calling for his swift return to acting.
The message appeared in the Chosun Ilbo on October 31, under the headline “To Everyone in Korea.” It was written in the form of an open letter by “a joint team of Japanese fandoms supporting actor Kim Soo Hyun.”
According to the letter, the fandom has been devoted to Kim since 2013, marking over 14 years of continuous support. The group stated that they wanted to remind Korean fans of their enduring loyalty and admiration.
“Kim Soo Hyun has never once betrayed our expectations,” the fans wrote. “He has always approached each of his roles with sincerity and excellence. He is an actor who continues to walk a respected path in Japan, honest, genuine, and without deceit.”
The letter also referred to the controversy surrounding the actor, expressing empathy and faith in his character. “He has endured an unbearably harsh situation for over half a year, striving to prove his innocence,” they said. “We sincerely hope that Kim Soo Hyun, the one and only actor loved and recognized around the world, will soon return to the embrace of his fans in Korea. We ask Korean fans to understand this heartfelt message and continue supporting him.”
The controversy involving Kim Soo Hyun began on March 10, when the family of the late actress Kim Sae Ron claimed through the YouTube channel Garo Sero Research Institute that the actress had dated Kim for six years, starting when she was 15 and he was in his late twenties.
Kim Soo Hyun’s representatives strongly denied the allegations, stating, “They briefly dated for about a year when she was an adult; there was never any relationship during her teenage years.” His agency has since filed a 12 billion KRW (approximately 8.7 million USD) lawsuit for defamation and damages against Garo Sero Research Institute CEO Kim Se Eui and the late actress’s family.
