Singer Kim Gun Mo has returned to the stage for the first time in six years since suspending his career amid sexual assault allegations. Even after being cleared of the charges, he had remained out of the public eye, and his tears on stage hinted at the emotions he had carried all this time.
On September 27th KST, Kim Gun Mo opened his ‘25-26 Kim Gun Mo Live Tour’ at the KBS Hall in Busan, marking his first public appearance since stepping away from the spotlight six years ago.
During his long-awaited comeback performance, Kim Gun Mo went far beyond the scheduled running time, delivering a total of 27 songs, including his signature hits “Seoul’s Moon”, “Sleepless Rainy Night”, “Excuse”, and “Speed.” He even followed the encore with a rare “re-encore,” showing gratitude for the overwhelming support of his fans.
At one point, Kim Gun Mo shared candidly, “I got married, and then divorced, and that’s how I’ve been living,” before breaking into tears. Overcome with emotion, he bowed deeply on stage to express his gratitude to the audience.
Kim Gun Mo had been accused in 2019 of sexually assaulting a female employee at an entertainment bar in Seoul’s Gangnam district. At the time, he was a cast member of SBS’s ‘My Little Old Boy’ but suspended all activities shortly after.
In March 2020, the Seoul Gangnam Police referred the case to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment. However, in November 2021, prosecutors dismissed the charges. Around that time, Kim Gun Mo was only three months into his marriage with pianist Jang Ji Yeon, which ended in divorce in June 2022.
Although he was ultimately cleared, he chose silence for six long years. During that period, his whereabouts were mostly shared secondhand—whether through acquaintances, YouTube mentions like “Jung Jun Ha Ha Ha,” or pianist Yang Tae Kyung, who recently shared an encounter with Kim Gun Mo during a band rehearsal on the 18th.
This time, however, it wasn’t hearsay but Kim Gun Mo himself who stood before the public. His direct words about his life, along with his tears and deep bow on stage, deeply moved the audience.
Despite his six-year absence, the nationwide tour sold out immediately upon ticket release, proving that his popularity remains intact. As Kim Gun Mo steps back into the music scene, much attention is focused on what his next chapter will bring.
