Renowned vocalist SoHyang has revealed that she quietly divorced her husband over two years ago, ending a 25-year marriage.
In an exclusive interview with Edaily, conducted ahead of her upcoming concert, SoHyang opened up about her past relationship. She debuted in 1996 and married her former husband in 1998, whom she met while performing in the CCM group POS. The couple had no children. Their relationship came to a close in 2023.
“I was in my early twenties,” she reflected. “Looking back, I don’t know why we rushed into it. We barely knew each other, yet we got married in a flash.”
She continued, “After getting married, we realized we had different personalities and values, but we tried to make it work. Over time, we concluded that it was best to go our separate ways. After a long period of reflection, we came to a mutual agreement and parted ways.”
‘K-pop Demon Hunters’ gave me the courage to speak up
SoHyang, who had kept the news private for over two years, said the Netflix animated film K-pop Demon Hunters sparked the decision to go public.
“It was a painful story, and I couldn’t bring myself to talk about it easily,” she shared. “I got immersed in making my first full-length album since debut, and time just flew by.”
The turning point came when she watched a scene in which the main character, Rumi, bravely revealed her hidden identity. “It moved me deeply,” she said. “At the same time, I felt ashamed for hiding the truth about my own divorce. I made a promise to myself that if I ever had the chance to speak honestly, I wouldn’t hide it anymore. I wanted to be courageous like Rumi.”
Recently, SoHyang released a cover video of "Golden", a song by Rumi’s girl group HUNTR/X from 'K-pop Demon Hunters'. The video has garnered over 2.4 million views on YouTube, drawing widespread attention.
“I got emotional while singing,” she admitted. “As someone who’s struggled with vocal nodules and pneumonia, I related to Rumi even more.” She added, “I’m truly grateful for all the love the cover received—it was more than I expected.”
“I want to comfort others through music, no matter the challenge”
Addressing her fans, SoHyang said, “To those learning about the divorce through this article, I want you to know that there’s no need to worry. I hope you’ll support both me and my former husband as we move forward on our own paths.”
Starting her career as a CCM artist, SoHyang gained recognition for her remarkable vocal range and naturally transitioned into mainstream music. She has graced major stages including the 2014 NBA Opening Ceremony, 2018 PyeongChang Paralympic Games, 2019 Gwangju World Aquatics Championships, and the 2024 Busan World Table Tennis Championships. She also made a strong impression on music shows such as MBC’s ‘I Am a Singer 2’, KBS 2TV’s ‘Immortal Songs’, and MBC’s ‘The King of Mask Singer’.
In 2023, SoHyang signed an exclusive contract with KQ Entertainment, home to global idol group ATEEZ. The connection was sparked during filming of KBS 2TV’s ‘I'm a Singer’, where she appeared alongside ATEEZ members Hongjoong and Jongho.
“I’m not afraid of trying new things,” she said. “If the opportunity arises, I’d love to expand my career overseas as well. My goal is to continue singing about dreams, love, and hope—and to bring healing to as many people as possible.”
She concluded the interview by expressing gratitude to her fans: “They are the reason I can keep going. I’ll never forget the letter I received from an 18-year-old American fan that read, ‘You are my inspiration. Please don’t change—stay just the way you are.’ I’ll keep striving to be someone who gives others courage.”
