Singer Kim Ho Joong has officially entered Somang Correctional Institution, the nation’s only private prison, where he will spend his sentence engaging in Christian-based rehabilitation programs.

On August 18, Kim was transferred from the Seoul Detention Center to Somang Prison, located in Buknae-myeon, Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province. His imprisonment was confirmed on the following day, August 19. Earlier, in May 2024, Kim withdrew his appeal, finalizing his two years and six months prison sentence. He had applied for entry to Somang Prison, and his request was approved.

Somang Prison, founded and operated by the Agape Foundation, is Asia’s first and only private prison. Built on Christian values, it emphasizes rehabilitation through faith-based programs and has gained recognition for its notably low recidivism rate.

Admission to the facility, however, is highly selective. Criteria include being a male inmate sentenced to seven years or less with more than one year remaining, having no more than two prior convictions, and excluding those convicted of drug-related crimes, national security violations, or organized crime involvement. Importantly, inmates must personally request admission and be approved by the Ministry of Justice.

Kim, who has been a practicing Christian, reportedly entered Somang Prison upon the recommendation of close associates who considered both his personal background and current circumstances. The prison is known for its personalized rehabilitation programs, designed to address each inmate’s individual needs and foster genuine change and recovery.

Attorney Jeong Tae Won of LKB & Partners commented on Kim’s case, noting shortcomings in the early handling of the incident.Kim Ho Joong had no prior record of drunk driving. If he had immediately admitted to the offense and assisted the victim, the case might have resulted in a fine or a suspended sentence,” Jeong said.“However, his decision to flee the scene, have his manager turn himself in, and attempt to destroy evidence significantly worsened the situation, ultimately leading to imprisonment.”

Regarding his transfer, Jeong added:Somang Prison is well known for addressing inmates by their names rather than numbers. His admission reflects an institutional effort to prioritize correction and rehabilitation.”

Jeong also noted that Kim may be eligible for parole after serving one-third of his sentence, saying:“If he demonstrates sincere reflection and fulfills his duties in prison, he may regain social trust and rebuild his future.”
