It has been confirmed that comedian Kim Byung Man is facing a lawsuit filed by his adopted daughter seeking confirmation of a biological parent-child relationship.
The lawsuit was filed by the daughter, Kim Byung Man legally adopted in the past, as she claims that Kim Byung Man had children with another woman while still legally married to her mother.
According to a report by TenAsia on August 7, Kim Byung Man's adopted daughter filed a lawsuit at the Seoul Family Court that day, seeking confirmation of a biological parent-child relationship against Kim Byung Man. The complaint reportedly states that Kim Byung Man had a child with another woman during the period he was married to 'A.'
In 2010, Kim Byung Man registered his marriage with 'A' and legally adopted her daughter from a previous marriage. He adopted 'A's daughter as his own through a special adoption process. At the time, it was Kim Byung Man's first marriage and A's second. Special adoption, approved by the family court, gives the adopted child the same legal status as the biological child.
Kim Byung Man and 'A' remained married for several years, but began living separately in 2019 and eventually finalized their divorce in 2023 following a Supreme Court decision. However, the legal relationship between Kim Byung Man and his adopted daughter remains intact as she is still listed as his adopted child in the official family registry.
Kim Byung Man has filed for termination of the adoption three times, but two of those requests were rejected by the court. The ruling for the remaining case is expected on August 8.
The adopted daughter has filed this lawsuit to confirm whether Kim Byung Man has children out of wedlock. She stated, "It appears that Kim Byung Man had two children with another woman before his marriage with my mother ended," and added, "If they are his biological children, they could have legal implications regarding inheritance, so the relationship needs to be verified." She has reportedly requested a court-ordered DNA test.
In response, Kim Byung Man's side initially denied the claims, saying there was no factual basis to them. A representative stated, "The other party has repeatedly pursued unreasonable legal action," and claimed that the motive seemed to be preserving the adoptive relationship for financial reasons.
However, Maeil Business Newspaper later reported that Kim Byung Man acknowledged the existence of the biological children. His side stated, "The verdict for the adoption termination case will be issued on August 8," and added, "It appears the lawsuit was filed with unreasonable claims in light of this situation."
They further revealed, "After Kim Byung Man's marriage with 'A' broke down, he had two children with his financé, whom he plans to marry this fall," thereby confirming the existence of the children.
