Netflix has confirmed the global release of its highly anticipated Korean original series 'Aema' on August 22. Starring Lee Hanee, the series is already drawing attention with its striking tagline, "Flipping an era obsessed with stripping."
Set in the backdrop of 1980s Korea, 'Aema' tells the behind-the-scenes story of the country’s most iconic and controversial erotic film, 'Madame Aema.' The series follows Hee Ran, a top actress disillusioned with the industry's exploitative demands, and Joo Ae, a bold new face in the entertainment world. Together, they navigate the pressures of stardom, censorship, and power struggles in the Korean film industry. The project is helmed by director Lee Hae Young, known for his work on 'Believer,' marking his first venture into serialized storytelling.
The teaser poster reveals a retro theater marquee advertising 'Madame Aema,' with Hee Ran and Joo Ae standing in stark contrast. Their facial expressions, makeup, and costumes highlight the generational and personal differences that will shape the central conflict of the series. The phrase "Flipping an era obsessed with stripping" captures the show’s rebellious spirit, hinting at a narrative focused on resistance, female solidarity, and reclaiming agency within a rigid system.
The teaser trailer deepens the intrigue, offering a glimpse into the chaotic and vibrant world of 1980s Chungmuro, Korea’s equivalent of Hollywood. Hee Ran, hailed as the biggest star of the decade, reacts in anger upon reading a script filled with objectifying language. Though she voices her objections to producer Goo Jung Ho, contractual obligations force her to remain in the film. As a result, she is demoted to a supporting role.
Meanwhile, the production company launches a search for a new lead. Rookie director Gwak In Woo and Jung Ho hold large-scale auditions and discover the confident and daring Joo Ae. Her request to "Make me the next Hee Ran" sparks a tense and curious reaction from Hee Ran, foreshadowing the complex relationship that will unfold between the two women.
The series also depicts the challenges behind filmmaking, from casting conflicts to creative disagreements, all set against the dramatic transformation of Korean cinema in the 1980s. The production design faithfully recreates the era, featuring vintage sets, bold fashion, and detailed styling that bring the golden age of Chungmuro to life.
'Aema' is a provocative and emotionally rich exploration of women fighting back against exploitation, each in their way. It promises a sharp, stylish, and at times humorous look at a pivotal moment in Korean film history. The series will be available exclusively on Netflix starting August 22.
