Actress Moon Ga Young has been confirmed to play the lead role of Huh Sua in the highly anticipated period drama 'Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid', set in 1920s colonial Korea.
In the drama, Huh Sua is a maid in a pro-Japanese household in Gunsan. Illiterate and unfamiliar with love, she finds comfort in the sea, believing herself to be a fish. But the moment she looks away from the water, fate strikes—stealing her voice and plunging her into a life of silence and revenge.
The series is a bold reinterpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, set against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation. Unlike the original fairytale, the love story here takes a dramatically different turn, focusing on a woman who gives everything to protect a man who has devoted his life to his country.
Directed by Hur Jin Ho, known for his emotionally rich storytelling, and shot by Choi Yoon Man, the cinematographer behind 'My Mister' and 'Not Others', the drama is produced by Take One Studio. It is expected to be one of the biggest productions of the year.
Moon Ga Young selected Whale Star as her next project. With its scale and emotional depth, anticipation is high for her portrayal of Huh Sua.
Actor Choi Woo Shik is reportedly in talks to play one of the two male leads. His casting decision is expected to be finalized soon.
Filming is scheduled to begin later this year.
