The man in his 60s, who fatally shot his son with a homemade firearm in Songdo, Incheon, has finally revealed his motive for the crime after days of silence. According to SBS, the suspect, referred to as Mr. A, confessed during an interview with criminal profilers that he committed the murder out of resentment after his son stopped providing him with financial support.
The fatal shooting occurred on the night of July 20 at the son's apartment in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu. Police say the 63-year-old suspect fired three shotgun shells in total. Two struck the victim, while the third hit a door inside the apartment. It is still unclear whether that final shot was aimed deliberately or missed its target.
Until recently, Mr. A had refused to disclose any clear motive beyond vague references to family discord. But when questioned by two criminal profilers brought in to assist the investigation, he admitted that his resentment stemmed from a halt in living expense payments. Mr. A stated, "My son had been supporting me financially, but he stopped doing so last year. Even though his business is doing well, he no longer supported me, and I was expressing my frustration about that."
Authorities later confirmed that Mr. A purchased the steel pipe used to construct the homemade fun last year, the same year the financial support reportedly ceased. The suspect confessed that he constructed the gun and the homemade bombs installed in his apartment by watching YouTube video instructions.
The case has shocked the nation not only for its brutality but for the chilling details revealed by the victim's family. According to the statement released by the bereaved, Mr. A's alleged intent extended far beyond a single target. They claimed he attempted to kill his daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and even a friend of the daughter-in-law who were present during the attack. The daughter-in-law reportedly told the police, "When I left the room to try and save my husband, he reloaded the gun, screamed, and chased after me." She added that Mr. A threatened the children, trying to break down a locked door to reach them.
Mr. A is now formally charged with murder, violation of the Firearms and Explosives Control Act, and attempted arson of an inhabited building. Authorities are continuing to investigate his actions and intent, and a criminal profiler has been assigned to further examine his psychological state. Officials are also reviewing whether to publicly disclose his identity, though the likelihood remains low due to the familial nature of the crime.
Mr. A did not attend his detention warrant hearing at the Incheon District Court.
