SBS's upcoming Friday-Saturday drama 'The Winning Try' is garnering much attention ahead of its premiere thanks to its star-studded cast and unique concept. Set to premiere on July 25, the series marks the return of actor Yoon Kye Sang to SBS dramas after 18 years. He plays the lead in a story about a once-famous rugby player who becomes the unlikely coach of a perpetually last-place high school team.
This marks Yoon Kye Sang's first SBS drama in 18 years. Over the years, he has showcased a wide range of acting through various characters. Yoon Kye Sang previously played the ruthless villain Jang Chen in the box office hit 'The Roundup,' which drew 6.88 million viewers. He also played an awkward kidnapper in 'The Kidnapping Day,' a doctor who once dreamt of becoming a chef in 'Chocolate,' and more.
Now he takes on the role of Joo Ga Ram, a quirky, unpredictable character with a mysterious past. Once dubbed the "idol of the rugby world," Ga Ram disappeared after retiring, only to reemerge as the coach of the struggling Hanyang High School rugby team. The drama follows this ragtag team as they strive for a miraculous win at the national sports festival. Facing pressure from vice principal Sung Jong Man (played by Kim Min Sang), who is trying to disband the team due to poor results, Joo Ga Ram counters with his deadpan humor and unbothered demeanor, adding an unpredictable charm to the story.
Yoon Kye Sang, who made a strong impression with his chilling portrayal of Jang Chen, is garnering much attention for being cast in a lighthearted sports drama. Many fans are looking forward to seeing how the actor will bring this comedic character to life.
Also starring in the drama are Lim Se Mi as Bae Yi Ji and Kim Yo Han as Yoon Sung Joon. The script was penned by Im Jin Ah, the winner of the SBS Cultural Foundation's screenwriting contest, and helmed by Jang Young Seok, the co-director of 'Taxi Driver 2.'
There has already been a high anticipation for the series, with netizens responding enthusiastically to the trailers. They commented, "Just the cast alone guarantees this will be fun," "Yoon Kye Sang is perfect for this rugby drama," "Looks like it’ll be 922% fun. Can’t wait," "Joo Ga Ram is literally just Yoon Kye Sang LOL," "Yoon Kye Sang never disappoints. Totally looking forward to it!" and "Is this the rugby version of Stove League?"
SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama 'The Winning Try,' the follow-up to 'Our Movie,' premieres Friday, July 25 at 9:50 p.m.
