Broadcaster Seo Yuri has announced her decision to step down from the controversial so-called “Excel broadcast.”.
On May 20th KST, Seo Yuri wrote on Instagram, “I have decided to leave the Excel broadcast based on my own judgment. I will not speak further on this matter, as any more commentary could cause unnecessary harm to others. I will continue on a different path moving forward.”
She added, “People will continue to think and speak in their own ways. But don’t worry about me—I’m not hurt. I will carry only the support and belief you’ve given me in my heart.”
Seo Yuri recently came under fire for appearing on an “Excel broadcast,” a type of online streaming program where BJs (broadcasting jockeys) compete by dancing provocatively in exchange for monetary donations from viewers. Her participation drew mixed reactions after clips of the show circulated across online communities.
At the time, Seo Yuri responded, “I’m aware that being part of such a show is not necessarily something to be proud of. But does that mean people have the right to mock or belittle others? I’ve swallowed my frustration and done my best to fulfill my responsibilities sincerely.”
She continued, “Perhaps I should have known how easily the world stamps labels and throws stones. But I still want to believe in a world that looks kindly upon those who don’t give up and endure until the end.”
She also appealed to the public’s empathy, saying, “I hope people realize that a careless word or sentence can ruin someone’s day or crush someone’s spirit.”
Meanwhile, Seo Yuri made headlines in 2023 when it was revealed that she had separated from producer Choi Byung Gil, with whom she had registered a marriage in 2019. The two were involved in a public dispute over financial matters, particularly a loan issue, with both sides posting accusatory messages on social media. In September, Seo Yuri announced she had repaid a loan of 1.14 billion KRW (approximately $820,000), and she reported an additional repayment in April this year.
