YG’s change towards the traditional idol concept; A unique & innovative move for their standards

YG Entertainment has always been known for being the company that went against the traditional idol format.

With Big Bang debuting in a sea of flower boy groups and 2ne1 debuting in a sea of feminine girl groups. While the concepts themselves were done beforehand by first-gen idols (even those coming from YG such as 1TYM & Swi.T), their spin on it made them stand out heavily.

Winner, Ikon, and BlackPink are idols who debuted in the third-gen. Still having the known YG style, they did, however, merge a bit towards the traditional idol concept. Especially BlackPink, who are dubbed as YG's first visual group.

But now with the 4th Gen rising, YG is debuting Treasure and in the future Baby Monsters.

YG has announced on MixNine that while they had their unique style of groups in the past, they would like to focus on visuals and charm along with a talent for their future entries.

Treasure is a 12 member Korean-Japanese boy group made by YG Entertainment. They will be a self-producing boy band who will also be known for their flower garden visuals.

And while it isn’t entirely confirmed yet, it is expected that Baby Monsters will follow suit. Especially with YG's admiration towards Twice and SNSD in the past, even planning on making that format for BlackPink, who were Pink Punk at the time (though ironically, Baby Monsters was a considered name for them).

Despite this being a traditional move for other companies, it would be a new one for YG.

Many agencies are creating junior idol groups that are opposite to their senior groups, even the most successful ones.

With BigHit going from BTS to TXT, & JYP going from Twice to Itzy, it would be interesting seeing how different Treasure will be from Winner/Ikon and Baby Monsters being compared to BlackPink.
