PSY HANGOVER SINGLE & MV REVIEW

Psy is back with a new single and MV, "Hangover." The man should need no introduction since this single comes on the heels of a record-breaking 2 billion views of "Gangnam Style" on YouTube. Not to mention, last year's "Gentleman" scored a 'perfect all-kill,' sweeping all of South Korea's major music charts and placing first on the weekly Instiz iChart. So is "Hangover" likely to replicate the same success?

Beginning with the auto-tuned, insistently repeated line "Hangover," it launches immediately into the chorus and then we hear the frenetic melody of Jason Derulo-inspired horns. The first minute is almost perfect and in English, no less.

But then it gets somewhat cringeworthy. The song itself is largely half-sung, half-rapped by Snoop Dogg. Not being a particular fan of Snoop Dogg, I wouldn't have minded so much if it were more of a collaboration, but it almost feels like the song isSnoop Dogg featuring Psy. Not something I would have expected.

I won't deny that some parts of it -- Psy's in particular -- are really catchy and hook-filled. I can already envision people repeatedly saying "Hangover" in various nightclubs across the globe. The frantic horn section is also a nice touch. It's just that I feel that the rap, such as it is, is not particularly well-done or memorable and really doesn't fit with the beat at all. Some of the lyrics are unintentionally funny like the eye-roller when Snoop Dogg spells out "G-A-N-G-S-T-A."

I wanted to like this more than I did. I'm anything but a hater and I credit the viral nature of "Gangnam Style" with initially getting me hooked into K-Pop. But this song is more annoying than entertaining. In this regard, "Hangover" seems an oddly appropriate title, likely inducing headache or nausea.

HANGOVER MV REVIEW

Despite my distaste for the song itself, the video is a riot, at times involving bodily fluids and what we've come to expect from Psy. He swims naked in a fountain, sets off this awesome chain of poured shots (poktanju -soju bombs) like dominos, and vomits in a toilet. As a pair, Snoop and Psy traipse drunkenly around Seoul and competitively brush their teeth, grab snacks from a convenience store, engage in a bar brawl, skip through an amusement park, and hit the karaoke bar joined by G-Dragon, all while dragging a couple of excitedahjummas with them. Psy's drunken illusions are amusing, as well.

G-Dragon and CL have cameos, CL reportedly passing on it until she heard that Snoop Dogg was involved. The cameos aren't as blatant as HyunA's part in "Gangnam Style"; rather, they're much more organic and appropriate to the scenes.

According to MTV, Snoop Dogg agreed to join Psy on the 18-hour shoot if he were guaranteed 8 hours of shooting and 10 hours of partying. According to sources, that was far from the case. This video, despite looking like loads of fun, was the result of grueling hard work that left Snoop Dogg exhausted.

As random as it is, the video still makes sense, and really leaves me wanting to do the same thing. Heaven help us if Psy starts going for the sexy concept. :)
