[Album Review] GOT7 - 'Got Love'

AKP STAFF
GOT7

GOT7, JYP's newest boy band in 6 years, dropped their 2nd mini-album on Monday. When they first emerged in January, the septet did extremely well with their debut "Girls, Girls, Girls," thrilling fans with a hip-hop image and sound. Now, we have their 2nd EP, 'Got Love.'

The EP opens with "U Got Me," and the rap, which comprises the bulk of the song, doesn't work for me. It sounds like half-whispered dialogue, and both Jackson and Yugyeom's voices annoy me here. I think it may be the cadence, but when it launches into actual singing, done by Youngjae, Jr., and JB, those parts are what save the song for me.

"A" is the track JYP released as the single, and it is incredibly catchy; the hook is a repeated piano riff, and the rap is extremely well-done. Evidently, they had such confidence in it that they included three remixes of it at the end. "A" is apparently a Korean expression; according to the press release, it is used in a teasing way when someone's trying to hide their feelings.

To my ears, "Bad Behavior" is the standout track on the album. Opening with synth vocals and easing into a rap that builds to a harmony, it's probably the most musically diverse selection on the EP. It includes edgy refrains and silky harmonies with the insistent synth vocals echoing the title of the song. JB, the leader of GOT7, penned this one; in my view, he composed an exciting and strong R&B tune.

If I had to use one word to describe "Good Tonight," it would be *smooth.* A mid-tempo song. Paradoxically, it does not include any rap segments at all. And I can hear a flute in there, as well. It's a love song, asking the girl not to care what others think and just make love.

"Forever Young" is a well-crafted ballad with soothing main verses and a catchy chorus. A soft melody and cranked down rap section pull it all together. It could almost be called "forever love" since that is what the lyrics express. It certainly sounds earnest and sincere.

I normally don't review remixes or instrumentals, but these caught my ear when I was playing the album. They are remixes of the song "A." While most remixes are amateurish house versions of a much better album version, each of these are rather unique and serve to give the album some more depth.

The 'collapsedone Remix' strips out the electronic beats and puts the song to an acoustic guitar. To be honest I like this better than the album version because it summons images of being around a fire on the beach at night, improvising songs to someone's guitar accompaniment.

The "TOYO Remix" version ratchets down the tempo drastically and incorporates sensual beats that practically belong on a bedroom mixtape.  The "FRANTS Remix" version of "A" reminds me of electrohouse with some 80's and 90's techno elements.

The only downside to all these remixes is that you might get tired of hearing the refrain 16 times in a half-hour, but YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary).

If you're into hip-hop or R&B at all I can tell you to run out and buy this. These 7 boys have delivered a multi-layered sonic experience that should please again and again. Put these songs on repeat -- you won't be sorry.

Recommended Tracks: "Bad Behavior," "Good Tonight," "A" (collapsedone Remix)
