Girls' Generation member and actress Seohyun successfully completed her violin collaboration performance despite ongoing debate over alleged “celebrity privilege.”
On March 13 at 8 p.m., the '8th Regular Concert of the Sol Philharmonic Orchestra' took place at Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul’s Songpa District. Seohyun appeared as a special guest performer for the evening.
Footage of Seohyun’s debut performance at the venue was later uploaded to the YouTube channel flowit.culture. The channel commented on her stage, noting that although her playing did not yet match the level of a professional musician, the challenge itself was moving.
“She may not have the skill of a professional performer yet, but the attempt itself was inspiring,” the channel wrote. “Who chooses 'Csárdás' for their first performance on such a large stage?” The commentary added that the small mistakes made during the performance actually made the stage more relatable and meaningful. Seohyun also presented an encore performance, delighting the audience.
Notably, Seohyun has reportedly been learning the violin for only about five months as a hobby. The Sol Philharmonic Orchestra itself is composed not of full-time professionals but of classical music enthusiasts who share a passion for the genre.
However, after news of Seohyun’s collaboration performance was announced, some classical music majors criticized the opportunity as “celebrity privilege.” Critics argued that despite being a beginner, Seohyun was able to perform at the prestigious Lotte Concert Hall largely due to her public recognition as an entertainer. The criticism quickly spread online and sparked debate.
Despite the controversy, Seohyun ultimately took the stage and completed the performance successfully. Following the concert, she reportedly held a brief meeting with fans who attended the event.
