Legendary singer Lee So Ra recently opened up about a past TV controversy and her painful two-year health battle. On March 15, she appeared as a guest on Jung Jae Hyung's YouTube channel to share her honest story.
During the video, she talked about her time on 'I Am a Singer'. The hugely popular program was the first of its kind to make veteran singers compete and receive scores for their music. When asked why she joined the competition show in the first place, she explained that she usually agrees to appear on programs when respected producers or directors ask her to, rather than actually wanting her singing to be scored.
She also addressed her past hosting controversy. During the show, when veteran singer Kim Gun Mo was eliminated, she openly complained and showed an upset expression. This eventually led to him getting a controversial second chance.
Looking back, she admitted she acted immaturely and should not have let her personal feelings show. She clarified that she was not personally close to Kim Gun Mo but was simply a huge fan. She explained that she forgot her role as the host in that moment and only viewed herself as a fellow contestant. After that incident, she realized her mistake and hosted the rest of the show much more professionally.

She then revealed the sad reason behind her recent two-year break from the public eye. She suffered from severe vocal cord damage, which led to deep depression. She stayed completely indoors for a year, her weight reached 100kg, and her blood pressure spiked dangerously high. She felt so lost that she stopped listening to music entirely. However, when Jung Jae Hyung sent her a soundtrack song for a new drama, it felt like a ray of light. The track reminded her that she was a singer and gave her the courage to record again.
Looking back at her long career, she joked about her classic music talk show 'Lee So Ra's Propose', saying she felt very awkward and unpolished hosting it back then. She also shared a painful memory from the overseas singing show 'Begin Again'. She explained that she severely hurt her throat during that trip because she stayed out in the cold night air just to look at the moon.
