Broadcaster Park Na Rae refused a settlement attempt from a man in his 30s who was sentenced to prison for breaking into her home and stealing valuables worth tens of millions of KRW.
On January 29, the Criminal Division 2-1 of the Seoul Western District Court held an appellate trial hearing for Mr. Jung, who was indicted on charges of theft and nighttime trespassing. Appearing in court in prison attire, Mr. Jung stated in his final statement, “I admit to all of the crimes I committed. I sincerely apologize for how serious my offenses were and for the great pain I caused the victims.”
He continued, “The victim, Park Na Rae, has conveyed through her lawyer that she refuses any deposit or settlement offer. I will do my best to ensure the stolen items can be returned to her.” Mr. Jung added, “I have done what I can to compensate not only the person who was punished for purchasing stolen goods connected to me, but also everyone else who suffered damage because of me. Please take this into consideration and grant me the opportunity to return to society sooner, so I can work hard and use the money I earn to recover the victims’ losses.”
He also said, “Last June, I received a suspended sentence in a separate fraud case. Until my detention, I had been repaying a certain amount. The victim in that case is also in a difficult situation. I ask for just one more chance. I am sorry.” Previously, Mr. Jung was accused of breaking into Park Na Rae’s home in Yongsan District, Seoul, alone in April of last year and fleeing after stealing valuables worth tens of millions of KRW. In the first trial, the court sentenced him to two years in prison, but he appealed the decision.
It was reported that Mr. Jung sold the stolen items as stolen goods and claimed he did not know the residence belonged to Park Na Rae at the time of the crime. In addition, he was arrested in late March of last year after committing another theft at a different home in Yongsan District.
