Girls' Generation's Hyoyeon shared her honest struggles with keeping up with today’s idol challenge culture, revealing that even dance veterans can feel overwhelmed by the rapidly changing trends.
On January 14, a new episode titled 'If It’s Our 15th Anniversary, Isn’t It Time to Speak Casually? / BabsaHyo 2 EP.17 Apink Edition' was released on her YouTube channel Hyo's Level Up.
In the video, Hyoyeon sat down with members of Apink to talk about how music shows and promotional culture have evolved over the years, particularly with the rise of dance challenges. Bomi admitted, “We’re making a comeback after almost three years, so I’m really nervous about what music shows are like these days.” Chorong recalled, “When we were promoting three years ago, challenges were just starting out,” while Hayoung agreed that it felt like the very beginning of the trend.
Chorong added that challenges now feel like a fixed part of idols’ schedules. Hayoung then asked Hyoyeon whether she also practiced in advance before filming challenges, jokingly asking if she had prepared ahead of time for the “Baggy Jeans” challenge. Hyoyeon replied that she practiced everything at home, while Chorong noted that many idols now rehearse challenges in dance studios beforehand.
Acknowledging the difficulty of recent choreography, Hyoyeon commented, “These days, the dances are really hard.” When Hayoung brought up a recent clip where Hyoyeon looked slightly awkward during a cute-song challenge, Hyoyeon laughed and admitted, “I practiced that a lot before going. I tried so hard to catch the beat, but no matter what, I just couldn’t figure it out.”
She went on to share her honest thoughts at the time, saying, “I even wondered, ‘Have I completely lost my sense of rhythm?’ I kept thinking, ‘Why can’t I do this?’” In the end, Hyoyeon revealed that she directly asked a junior idol on set, “I don’t know the beat. Can you tell me where it is?” drawing laughter from everyone.
When Bomi reassured her by saying, “Our songs have very clear beats,” Hyoyeon immediately responded with relief, saying, “That’s perfect,” highlighting both the humor and reality behind adapting to the newer generation’s challenge culture.
