Former UN member and singer Choi Jung Won has been fully cleared of adultery allegations that persisted for more than four years, after South Korea’s Supreme Court rejected the final appeal, bringing the legal dispute to a definitive close.
According to legal sources, on January 16, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by 'B,' the ex-husband of 'A,' a married woman who had previously been linked to Choi in the adultery controversy. With the appeal rejected, the appellate court’s ruling was upheld in full, and 'B' was ordered to bear the costs of the appeal.
In its decision, the Supreme Court stated: “After reviewing the records of this case, the lower court’s judgment, and the grounds for appeal, we find that the arguments presented do not include reasons stipulated under Article 4, Paragraph 1 of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Procedure for Appeal, or fall under the reasons outlined in Paragraph 3 of the same article.” The court added, “Accordingly, pursuant to Article 5 of the Act, the appeal is dismissed.”
In the initial trial of A and B’s divorce proceedings, the court had attributed responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage to A and ordered her to pay 30 million KRW (approx. 20,358.72 USD) in damages. However, the appellate court overturned that ruling, determining that Choi Jung Won’s relationship with A did not constitute an illicit affair and that the collapse of the marriage was unrelated to the alleged adultery. B subsequently filed an appeal, but the Supreme Court’s rejection has now legally concluded the adultery allegations.
Following the ruling, A shared her reaction on social media, writing, “The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal, and it has been officially confirmed that this was not an affair,” adding, “This is the result I waited more than four years for.”
The controversy surrounding Choi Jung Won first emerged in December 2022, when B filed a damages lawsuit seeking 100 million KRW (approx. 67,862 USD) against the singer. At the time, Choi firmly denied the allegations, stating, “She is simply a younger acquaintance from my neighborhood whom my family has known since childhood. There was absolutely no inappropriate relationship.”
