Performance artist Poppin' Hyun Joon has resigned from his professorship following allegations of creating a hostile classroom environment and making remarks that caused students sexual humiliation.
On December 13, Poppin' Hyun Joon, who served as a visiting professor in the Department of Practical Dance at Baekseok Arts University, released a statement on Instagram addressing the controversy.
"I am issuing this apology and statement as a professor regarding the recent online controversy concerning the Practical Dance Department," he wrote. "First, I offer my sincere apologies to the students."
He admitted to the allegations, stating, "I deeply regret creating an oppressive atmosphere through inappropriate words and actions as an educator. I sincerely apologize for causing students to feel sexual humiliation, regardless of my intentions."
He concluded, "As a measure of taking full responsibility, I am resigning from my professorship at Baekseok Arts University effective today."
The resignation follows an anonymous expose posted on social media by a student, identified as 'A', from the Department of Practical Dance.
Student 'A' claimed that a professor frequently used profanity and made remarks that induced sexual humiliation. The student also alleged that the professor created a threatening atmosphere with shouting and treated students disrespectfully during production practice classes. According to the claim, the professor told students, "This isn't your stage, it's mine," effectively treating them as mere background props (or 'extras').
Furthermore, 'A' accused the professor of habitually ending classes early and wasting lecture time on personal stories unrelated to the curriculum.
Although the initial post did not explicitly name Poppin' Hyun Joon, the details provided led to him being identified as the figure in question, prompting his eventual admission and resignation.
