A U.S. adaptation of 'Squid Game,' Netflix’s No. 1 global hit series, is reportedly moving into production according to several American media outlets.

On November 20 (local time), Collider and other U.S. publications reported that director David Fincher’s long-developing project titled 'Squid Game: America' is set to begin production within the next few months. The report states that details of the project were listed on the Film & Television Industry Alliance (FTIA) website.

According to the listing, 'Squid Game: America' is scheduled to begin filming on February 26 next year with production planned in Los Angeles and locations across California. Director David Fincher is credited as the lead director. Original creator Hwang Dong Hyuk and Kim Ji Yeon, CEO of Pertsman Studio, are listed as producers alongside him.

The new work is being developed as a spin-off set in the same universe as the original 'Squid Game' rather than a simple remake. Although the world-building remains the same, the U.S. version aims to explore how the deadly games might operate differently in an American context and provide a distinct viewing experience.

Actress Cate Blanchett, who appeared in 'Squid Game Season 3,' is listed among the cast members.

Collider noted that although David Fincher has not personally confirmed the project, this is the most concrete update regarding a U.S. adaptation in months. The outlet added that if filming begins early next year, the most likely release window would be in 2028, possibly around Christmas, similar to the release timing of Seasons 1 and 2.

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk previously stated in an interview following the June release of Season 3 that there would not be another season. Although the storyline included Seong Gi Hun’s daughter studying in the United States and mentioned Cate Blanchett, he clarified that these elements were not meant to hint at a future season.

Regarding rumors that he would oversee the U.S. spin-off, Hwang also denied the speculation. He stated that the ending of the season was not designed to connect to an American version and that rumors about filming starting in December, his directing the project, or Cate Blanchett starring in it were all untrue. He added that he greatly admires David Fincher and would consider participating if approached.

David Fincher is widely known for directing many acclaimed and successful films, including 'SE 7EN,' 'Fight Club,' 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' 'Zodiac,' and 'The Social Network.' He has been nominated three times for Best Director at the Academy Awards and is considered one of the most influential filmmakers in the United States.

Netflix has not yet issued an official statement regarding the reported project.
