For fans of Korean popular music, November 1st is a day of heartfelt remembrance. It marks the passing of two of the industry's most influential artists: singer-songwriter Yoo Jae Ha (November 1, 1987) and vocalist Kim Hyun Sik (November 1, 1990).
The two artists, who were defining voices of the 1980s, both passed away tragically young—Yoo Jae Ha at just 25 and Kim Hyun Sik at 32. In a sad coincidence, the two, who were also friends, died on the exact same date just three years apart. Their gentle voices and poetic lyrics have left a timeless mark on the industry, with their songs still beloved by the public and younger artists today.
Though they are gone, their legacies are stronger than ever. The 'Yoo Jae Ha Music Contest' has been held every year since 1989, discovering over 300 talented singer-songwriters, including Yoo Hee Yeol, Kim Yeon Woo, and HYBE founder Bang Si Hyuk. Kim Hyun Sik's music has been honored with a 30th-anniversary remake album and a jukebox musical titled 'I Loved You'.
Many of today's top artists, including K-pop idols, continue to introduce their beautiful music to new generations through stunning covers. Here are a few unforgettable live performances of their most iconic songs.
