Netflix’s animated film ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ (directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans) may be on track for the Oscars, and it has already secured its eligibility.
On November 21 (local time), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) released the list of films eligible for consideration in the Best Animated Feature category for the '98th Academy Awards.' A total of 35 titles have been registered for review.
‘KPop Demon Hunters’ made the list along with major contenders such as Disney’s 'Elio' and 'Zootopia 2,' as well as Japanese animated features including 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle' and 'Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.'
The film screened in limited theatrical runs in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco this past June, which allowed it to meet the Academy’s eligibility requirements. It was, however, excluded from 'BAFTA Awards' consideration.
The question now is whether it can advance to the official nominations. Foreign media outlets predict that ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ has strong potential in both the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song categories. The final list of nominees will be announced on January 22 next year.
The '98th Academy Awards' will take place on March 15 in Los Angeles.
