A man in his 30s who was sentenced to prison for breaking into broadcaster Park Na Rae’s home and stealing valuables worth tens of millions of won has appealed his conviction and will face trial once again.
On November 25th KST, the Seoul Western District Court (Criminal Division 2-1, Appeals) announced it will hold the first appellate hearing for defendant A, who was indicted on charges of theft and nighttime residential intrusion. The hearing is scheduled for January 22nd next year.
A is accused of breaking into Park Na Rae’s residence in Seoul’s Yongsan District on April 4th and fleeing after stealing valuables worth several tens of millions of won. During police questioning, he claimed he did not know the home belonged to Park Na Rae when he entered and took the items.
He also attempted to sell the stolen goods as stolen property. It was further confirmed that A had previously been arrested for committing another theft at a different residence in Yongsan in late March.
In March, the first trial court sentenced A to two years in prison on charges of theft and nighttime home intrusion. The court stated, “The defendant admitted to the charges and expressed intention to turn himself in to the Yongsan Police Station on April 11th, leading to the return of the stolen goods to the victim (Park Na Rae). However, the defendant has prior convictions of a similar nature, the stolen items were of high value, and the victim is requesting severe punishment.”
Although A acknowledged his crimes during the trial and expressed remorse, he filed an appeal immediately after receiving the prison sentence.
Meanwhile, B and C—who were charged with negligent receipt of stolen goods in the course of business—were fined 2 million won and 3 million won respectively in the first trial. As they did not file appeals, their sentences have been finalized.
