Netflix has struck gold once again as the Chuseok holidays kicked off.
The new Netflix original series 'Genie, Make A Wish,' which was released on October 3, shot straight to the No. 1 spot in Korea's Netflix rankings within just one day, signaling it a major hit. With fierce competition among the OTT platforms during the holiday season, the debut at No.1 so quickly is a record-breaking feat.
According to Netflix Korea's data as of 2:50 PM on October 4, 'Genie, Make A Wish' ranked first in the 'Today's Top 10 Series in Korea' category, followed by 'Crime Scene Zero,' 'K for Kimbap,' 'The Ballad of Us,' and 'Bon Appétit, Your Majesty.'

'Genie, Make A Wish' has established itself as the first breakout hit perfectly timed for the holiday season in Korea.
The fantasy romantic comedy tells the story of a Genie (portrayed by Kim Woo Bin), a spirit from a lamp who awakens after a thousand years, and Ga Young (played by Suzy), a woman incapable of feeling emotions. Their encounter and the mysterious three wishes lead to a whirlwind of humor, chemistry, and love. The contrast between the naive spirit and the emotionally sealed human, paired with the symbolic theme of “wishes,” creates a refreshing and engaging narrative.

In particular, the series gained immense attention as this marks the return of writer Kim Eun Sook, the mastermind behind numerous hit series, including 'Lovers in Paris,' 'Secret Garden,' 'Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin),' 'Mr. Sunshine,' and 'The Glory.' Fans had been eagerly awaiting her return to the romantic comedy genre, and her signature witty dialogue and tightly woven storytelling are alive and well in 'Genie, Make A Wish.' From the start, the drama captivates viewers with its blend of humor, sentiment, and fantasy.

On top of Kim Eun Sook's renowned writing skills, Kim Woo Bin and Suzy have reunited after nine years, after 'Uncontrollably Fond,' adding to the buzz. Kim Woo Bin transforms into a charismatic yet humorous genie, while Suzy portrays the emotionally detached Ga Young with depth and subtlety. Their chemistry has been widely praised as “textbook-level romantic comedy synergy.”

The supporting cast is equally stellar, featuring Ahn Eun Jin, Noh Sang Hyun, Go Kyu Pil, and Lee Joo Young. Noh Sang Hyun delivers a commanding presence as “Soo Hyun,” the angel of death who clashes with Genie, while Go Kyu Pil adds comic relief as Genie’s loyal aide, “Said.” Special appearances by Kim Ji Hoon, Daniel Henney, and Song Hye Kyo have also drawn major attention. Song Hye Kyo’s cameo reportedly came about thanks to her past collaborations with writer Kim Eun Sook on 'The Glory' and 'Descendants of the Sun,' making her a key “hidden card” for the series.

The production quality is another highlight. With scenes filmed on location in Dubai, the show’s golden deserts and exotic visuals bring its fantasy romance to life. Action sequences featuring Genie and Ga Young soaring over Seoul’s skyline—and clashes between Genie and the angel Soo Hyun—add cinematic scale and polish. Writer Kim Eun Sook explained, “The lamp is where Genie has been trapped for 983 years. At first it’s silent and desolate, but it gradually transforms into a warm, lively space with Ga Young’s arrival,” emphasizing the visual symbolism behind the setting.

Netflix has a history of releasing major hits like 'Squid Game' during holiday seasons, and 'Genie, Make A Wish' appears to be another strategic success—capturing both domestic and global viewers early in its run.
With its blend of imaginative fantasy, heartfelt romance, and Kim Eun Sook’s emotional storytelling, 'Genie, Make A Wish' has truly emerged as the standout series of the Chuseok holidays.
