Singer Sung Si Kyung’s agency has issued an apology following allegations that it operated illegally without proper registration for nearly 14 years.
On September 16th, SK Jaewon stated, “We were not aware of the mandatory registration requirements for a pop culture and arts agency. We have now recognized this and are in the process of completing the registration.”
The agency emphasized that there was no intentional violation. It explained that the corporation was established in 2011, while the requirement for registration as a pop culture and arts agency was introduced about three years later. The statement added, “We sincerely apologize for causing concern through this matter. Moving forward, we will strictly adhere to related laws and manage the agency more responsibly.”
SK Jaewon is a one-person agency led by Sung Si Kyung’s elder sister, Ms. Sung. However, it has faced criticism for failing to register as a pop culture and arts agency since its founding in 2011.
Under Article 26 of the Act on the Promotion of the Pop Culture and Arts Industry, corporations and individual agencies employing more than one person must register as a pop culture and arts agency. Violations may result in up to two years of imprisonment or fines of up to 20 million KRW (approximately $14,500). All business activities conducted while unregistered are considered illegal and may be subject to suspension.
Previously, musical actress Ock Joo Hyun also faced controversy for failing to register her one-person agency, TOI Entertainment, under the same act. Her agency explained the oversight as an administrative error.
