Former Wonder Girls member Yubin has expressed her heartfelt gratitude after a national petition calling for health insurance coverage of a breast cancer brain metastasis treatment surpassed 50,000 signatures.
On September 12, Yubin shared on her social media, “I sincerely thank everyone who joined this petition with their hearts and gave their precious support.”
She continued, “Your encouragement and support have been a great strength to my family and have brought hope and courage to many patients as well. Above all, I was deeply moved by your warm hearts.” Yubin added that she would “cherish this heartfelt support for a long time and never forget the comfort it has brought.”
Earlier, Yubin revealed that a close family member has been battling breast cancer since 2020, and in 2023 the illness spread to the brain, making treatment even more difficult. She explained that although an effective medication had been identified, the prohibitively high cost and lack of health insurance coverage made access nearly impossible.
On September 1, she called on the public to join the petition for the inclusion of the drug Tukysa in Korea’s national health insurance system. The petition highlights that despite the drug’s proven effectiveness for HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer patients and its approval by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, patients must currently import it at great personal expense, making treatment inaccessible for most.
The petition, first registered on August 27, gathered 53,326 signatures as of September 13, surpassing the 50,000 threshold required for referral to the National Assembly’s standing committee for review.
Addressing concerns raised by some followers, Yubin clarified in a social media comment that the patient in question is “my cousin’s wife’s older sister,” emphasizing transparency about her family connection.
