Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' is making headlines after soaring to the top of the weekend box office in the United States with a special two-day sing-along release - a rare move for Netflix, which typically does not screen its films in theaters. The animated feature pushed past New Line and Warner Bros’ horror film 'Weapons.' Industry sources report that the film earned an estimated $18 million, while 'Weapons' followed with $15.6 million in its third weekend. This is a bit unusual as 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' was available on Netflix for over two months but still was able to top the box office.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' drew an impressive 1.5 million admissions across Saturday and Sunday. Standard tickets averaged $13.63, while premium screenings priced at $16.31 accounted for 18% of admissions. The film brought in $9.6 million on Saturday and $8.4 million on Sunday, marking a slight 13% dip day-to-day.
On Saturday, 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' clearly outperformed 'Weapons,' with the horror movie earning $6.4 million compared to the animated feature’s stronger numbers.
