Academy Award-winning actress Youn Yuh Jung returns to the big screen in the highly anticipated Hollywood film 'The Wedding Banquet,' which has officially confirmed its Korean release date for September 24.
The film is a modern reimagining of Ang Lee’s 1993 Golden Bear-winning classic of the same name, which premiered at the '43rd Berlin International Film Festival.' The remake transforms the story into a witty, unpredictable comedy, centering on a same-sex couple’s fake marriage scheme that is hilariously upended by a sharp-witted Korean grandmother.
Directed by Andrew Ahn, the Korean-American filmmaker known for bringing nuanced cultural perspectives to his works, the remake preserves the emotional core of the original while infusing it with contemporary sensibilities and Korean cultural elements.
Ahead of its release, The Wedding Banquet earned critical recognition at the 41st Sundance Film Festival, where it won the 'Amazon MGM Producers Award' (Fiction). The film also generated strong buzz among audiences at the festival. Its North American premiere on April 18 further cemented its reputation, with international media offering glowing reviews: The Hollywood Reporter praised it as “irresistibly charming,” Collider hailed it as “a fresh spin on the classic rom-com,” and The Wrap called it “a sharp and hilarious crowd-pleaser.”
Youn Yuh Jung, who captivated global audiences in 'Minari,' reprises her role as a Korean grandmother named Ja Young, drawing particular acclaim from critics. Variety described her as “a commanding presence who continues to own the screen,” while The New York Times applauded her performance for “elevating the character of the ‘Korean grandmother’ with depth and authenticity.” These reviews have further heightened anticipation among Korean audiences.
The newly released teaser poster adds to the excitement, featuring the tagline, “Two partners, one wedding?” alongside a striking image of Angela (played by Kelly Marie Tran) in a traditional Korean bridal hanbok, complete with the symbolic red cheek dots known as yeonji gonji. The playful imagery teases the whirlwind of comedic mishaps to come, sparking curiosity about how the faux wedding plan will unravel in this heartwarming romantic comedy.
