Is the K-Drama Love Triangle Dead in 2025?
Love triangles used to be a staple in K-dramas, but times are changing. As storytelling trends shift, more and more viewers are noticing their quiet exit. The once-essential romantic tension that came from three-way dynamics now feels tired, and in many recent series, it's completely gone.
Instead, this year has introduced dramas that are grounded in more realistic, heartfelt relationships. Take 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' for example. The story revolves entirely around a single couple, allowing their connection to unfold naturally. 'Our Unwritten Seoul' built two parallel love lines without ever tossing in a third wheel for drama’s sake. Even 'Love Scout' won praise for its focus on personal and familial growth, completely sidestepping the typical romantic triangle.
Love Triangle Fatigue
But do fans even want love triangles anymore? On Reddit, one popular thread asked viewers which tropes they’re most tired of, and love triangles showed up high on the list. Some users called them a “lazy plot tool” used to stir drama when the writing runs dry. Others admitted they could work if handled well, pointing to older examples like 'True Beauty' or 'Hometown Cha Cha Cha' as doing it right.
At this point, the fatigue is real. Audiences have grown weary of the same love triangle trope playing out over and over again. Thankfully, it seems like writers and producers are taking note, shifting toward storylines that feel more grounded, emotionally resonant, and less formulaic. It’s a refreshing change for many fans who crave romance with genuine character growth and depth, not just another recycled plot device. If this new wave of storytelling continues to gain momentum, K-dramas may be entering a much-needed evolution. Let’s hope this trend continues.
