Top executives from Korea’s Naver and its webtoon subsidiary Webtoon Entertainment will meet with Netflix leadership this week in Silicon Valley, hinting at a possible expansion of their strategic partnership.
Korea Herald reported on June 2 that Naver CEO Choi Soo Yeon and Webtoon CEO Kim Jun Koo were invited by Netflix, marking Choi’s first meeting with the streaming giant. The media outlet reported that this marks "the first meeting between Choi Soo Yeon and Netflix executives," and added, "while details have not been disclosed, the invitation-only nature of the meeting has sparked speculation about new collaborative opportunities at both the content and platform levels."
The two companies have been strengthening ties, notably through a bundling deal in late 2023 that offered Netflix’s ad-supported plan as part of Naver’s paid membership in Korea. This led to a sharp increase in Netflix users in Korea and boosted Naver membership sign-ups.
Naver Webtoon has also become a key content source for Netflix, with hit series like 'All of Us Are Dead' and 'Sweet Home.' While rumors suggest deeper integration, both companies deny any plans to merge platforms, stating the meeting is exploratory and has no set agenda.
A Naver official told Korea Herald, "It's a meeting arranged purely within the context of a partnership. The CEOs are indeed scheduled to meet with Netflix executives at their invitation, but there are no predetermined agendas or confirmed outcomes."
