Comedian Lee Kyung Kyu has issued a public apology after being investigated for driving under the influence of prescription medication, admitting, “I was careless.”
On June 24, Seoul’s Gangnam Police Station summoned Lee for questioning after booking him on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act. The investigation lasted approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, from 9:00 p.m. to 10:45 p.m.
The case stems from an incident on June 8, when Lee allegedly drove in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam, after taking medication prescribed for panic disorder. A theft report was mistakenly filed by a witness who confused his vehicle with another of the same model. Subsequent field testing and forensic analysis by the National Forensic Service both returned positive results for the presence of medication.
“I wasn’t fully aware that my medication could affect my ability to drive,” Lee said. “This experience has made me realize the importance of being more cautious. I was careless.”
Through his lawyer, Lee explained that he has been struggling with panic disorder for the past 10 years. “That day, I was feeling severely unwell and decided to drive myself to the hospital,” he said. “Regardless of the situation, it was an act of carelessness with no excuse.”
To his fans, Lee offered a heartfelt apology: “I’m truly sorry for disappointing those who have supported me for so long.”
