Lee Jaepo, a former actor known for his role in the drama 'Rustic Period' (Yain Sidae), has been fined for fraud.
On June 3, Judge Park Jongwoong of the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Division 16 sentenced Lee to a fine of 10 million won after he was indicted on fraud charges.
Lee was accused of deceiving an acquaintance, referred to as “A,” out of 20 million won on November 22, 2020, at a pension in Ganghwa County, Incheon.
At the time, Lee reportedly told A, “My wife’s clothing store is struggling due to COVID-19. I urgently need 20 million won.” However, it was later revealed that he intended to use the money for personal purposes and was already burdened with debt from financial institutions.
Judge Park stated, “Given the nature and method of the crime, the offense is of a serious nature. The defendant committed the crime during a repeat offender probation period and failed to reflect.” However, he also noted, “Lee has admitted to the wrongdoing, reached a settlement with the victim, and has no prior convictions for similar crimes,” as reasons for the sentencing.
Lee Jaepo began his career in entertainment as a comedian after being selected in the 1983 MBC Comedy Contest. He later transitioned into acting, appearing in historical and political dramas such as 'The Fourth Republic' and 'Rustic Period'. Since 2006, he has worked as a journalist.
