Netflix has officially announced the production of a new original series titled 'Vole' (working title), revealing its star-studded cast featuring acclaimed actors Ryu Jun Yeol and Sul Kyung Gu. The gripping thriller follows the story of a reclusive novelist who teams up with a relentless loan shark in a desperate pursuit to reclaim his stolen identity and life.
Based on the Kakao webtoon of the same name, 'Vole' draws inspiration from the eerie Korean folktale, “If a rat eats a fingernail, it becomes a human.” The story centers on Moon Jae, a withdrawn writer suffering from social anxiety. His secluded world crumbles overnight when his phone’s fingerprint recognition fails, and even his only friend disappears. With no way to prove who he is, Moon Jae discovers that a mysterious figure known only as Vole has stolen his name, identity, and everything he owned.

Determined to retrieve what was taken from him, Moon Jae begins a dangerous chase. He unexpectedly joins forces with No Ja, a private detective and loan shark who had been pursuing Moon Jae for a debt. No Ja becomes entangled in Moon Jae’s fight against the elusive 'Vole,' hoping to reclaim his money along the way. The series promises a suspenseful narrative where the boundary between truth and illusion collapses, immersing viewers in a quest for hidden truths.
The series will be helmed by director Kim Hong Sun, known for his masterful work in genre titles like 'Dear Hongrang,' 'Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area,' 'Voice,' 'L.U.C.A.: The Beginning,' and 'The Guest.' Screenwriter Lee Jae Gon, who garnered praise for his character-driven storytelling in 'Special Affairs Team TEN,' and 'A Model Family' will pen the script. Their collaboration is expected to deliver a high-caliber thriller that captivates audiences worldwide.
Adding to the anticipation, 'Vole' will be produced by Kakao Entertainment, a company with a strong track record in adapting webtoons and web novels into successful dramas such as 'When the Phone Rings,' 'Business Proposal,' and 'Karma.' C-JeS Studio and H-House will co-produce the project.
Leading the series is Ryu Jun Yeol, renowned for his versatile performances in Netflix’s 'The 8 Show,' the film 'Revelations,' 'Believer' and 'Little Forest.' He takes on the role of Moon Jae, a socially withdrawn novelist who is thrust into chaos after losing everything to 'Vole.' With his nuanced and emotionally rich acting, Ryu is expected to deliver a compelling portrayal of a man caught in psychological turmoil.

Opposite him is Sul Kyung Gu, a powerhouse actor celebrated for his intense and magnetic presence in films like 'Kingmaker,' 'A Normal Family,' and the Disney+ series 'Hyper Knife.' He portrays No Ja, a cold, calculated loan shark who will do anything for money. When No Ja reunites with Moon Jae after a three-year disappearance, he becomes ensnared in the mystery behind 'Vole' while trying to recover his lost funds. Sul’s commanding performance is set to add depth and tension to the series.
'Vole' marks the first collaboration between Ryu Jun Yeol and Sul Kyung Gu. Their unexpected alliance in the pursuit of 'Vole' promises electric chemistry and a suspense-filled journey. The series will be available exclusively on Netflix.
